Who will be mayor of Ottawa after the November municipal elections?
If Ottawa residents wonder why our politicians don't listen to us or don't take us seriously, we need to look in the mirror and realize where the problems start. How can we complain about rising taxes and simultaneously support politicians who promise to spend more and more? The truth is that the average person likes the aggravation caused by boondoggles and scandals. Ottawa's unique geography (i.e. a large city surrounded my farmland) insulates us against understanding how life in real Canadian towns and cities works. If we continue pushing our city council to the left by electing unabashed socialist politicians, pretty soon our city centre will be on top of Carp Mountain!      September 1, 2006... Terry Kilrea has officially dropped out of the race for mayor and has endorsed "Diamond" Bob Chiarelli. The news was both saddening and stultifying. That Kilrea could conceive of endorsing Chiarelli has left many people bewildered and angered. His political naïvety is palpable, but that was actually his strong suit! It was widely believed that Larry O'Brien's entry into the contest was designed to split the right-wing vote and delivery victory to either Chiarelli or Munter. However, nobody knows for sure what O'Brien's political stripes are at this time. We could be in for a surprise and discover we now have no right-wing candidates! While Kilrea's premature resignation could be atrributed to political genius by the two left-of-centre candidates, poll numbers suggest Ottawa will get a left-of-centre mayor no matter what. If Kilrea decides to run for city council in Bay Ward, it will confirm my suspicion that he is taking aim at the "Alexes". By endorsing Chiarelli, he is trying to prevent an Alex Munter victory, and by running in Bay Ward, he is personally trying to knock off the much beloved (gag!) Alex "I want to ban goose liver paté" Cullen. The perception that Larry O'Brien, a businessman and CEO of a private company, is right-wing may backfire on Kilrea as right wing votes go to O'Brien instead of Chiarelli. "A vote for O'Brien is a vote for Munter" will likely not influence many dedicated Kilrea supporters. And speaking as a resident of Bay Ward, I don't like Kilrea's chances against Cullen. Kilrea is an honest man playing politics with thugs and cons. Canadians love to hug their thugs, or at least vote for them. |
