For the first time in a LONG time, Ottawa will have a meaningful race for mayor in the upcoming municipal elections. The competition between the leading candidates may even motivate more than 1 out of every 4 people to vote! Will Ottawans re-elect the same bunch of career politicians once again or choose someone without the "experience" who can bring a new perspective to the table and clean up the city? Will voters throttle to the left and pick a candidate so close to the edge of the political spectrum that he's practically standing in Tiananman Square? Will they veer right and choose someone who can bring common sense to the table? Or will they settle into the safe confines of the incumbent Liberal who wants to take $1 billion from taxpayers and put us on a slow train to nowhere? What do voters want? Do we want pride parades every weekend? Do we want bylaw officers cracking down on rural residents who sell ungraded eggs and bake pies without firm recipes? Or can we focus law enforcement toward dealing with the problems of street people and panhandlers harassing residents in the city core?
If Ottawa residents wonder why our politicians don't listen to us or don't take us seriously, we need to look in the mirror and realize where the problems start. How can we complain about rising taxes and simultaneously support politicians who promise to spend more and more? The truth is that the average person likes the aggravation caused by boondoggles and scandals. Ottawa's unique geography (i.e. a large city surrounded my farmland) insulates us against understanding how life in real Canadian towns and cities works. If we continue pushing our city council to the left by electing unabashed socialist politicians, pretty soon our city centre will be on top of Carp Mountain!
