The Spotlight ONCE WERE WARRIORS First Nations Day (Summer Solstice - June 21, 2007)         What ever happened to the noble North American aboriginal, the iconic symbol of wisdom and harmony with Nature? I guess he went to law school and joined the NDP. These days, you can't tell a person of aboriginal ancestry from the long-haired, unwashed hippie freaks that fill the streets every time there's a G-8 summit somewhere in the world. Aboriginals have become yet another special interest group seeking its entitlements from the rest of Canada, like so many other socialist activist groups.         Canada sinks billions of dollars every year into government departments and aboriginal organizations while granting aboriginal peoples many special privileges and exemptions from Canadian law. And what does this produce? Many aboriginal people on reserves live in grinding poverty while some native leaders drive sportscars and keep enormous mansions. At the mere suggestion that the Auditor General, Sheila Fraser, should be allowed to investigate where the money ends up, the NDP jumps into the spotlight and yells "Racism!" Do native peoples have a right to be angry? It certainly sounds like they do, just like the rest of us taxpayers who want accountability. Unfortunately, some native peoples have chosen to get angry at the wrong people and to express themselves in reprehensible ways.         Land claim settlements are difficult to negotiate and require time. There is no magic formula to follow to ensure expediency. Frustration on both sides is palpable. Unfortunately, when animosity boils over, the process is hindered. This fact alone should dissuade aboriginals from taking their protests to the streets where they throw up barricades, but instead this form of protest is becoming all too common. When a protest at Ipperwash in 1994 turned deadly with the shooting of Dudley George by the R.C.M.P., aboriginal radicals had a martyr with which to market their claim to being victims of the "white man" while going on the offensive. The dispute at Ipperwash was legitimate given that lands borrowed by the government were not returned to the native peoples. The land claim dispute in Caledonia, Ontario, lacks real merit. The blockades in Caledonia need to be removed and the laws of the land need to be enforced. The blockade is now a stage where racial hatred is festering with every passing day. The Ontario government should have ordered the RCMP to move in on Day 1, but the dithering of impotent Liberals has made the outcome of more than a year's inaction worse. Natives are growing more frustrated. Innocent residents of Caledonia have had their lives disrupted, and the financial losses they have incurred must be staggering.         I would REALLY like to believe that the average aboriginal person in Canada does not hate this country or the "white man" with a burning passion. Unfortunately, I cannot but feel that aboriginals are acting like a bunch of spoiled children. The average Canadian is not to blame for the woes of the reserves. We are far removed from our ancestors who negotiated the original land claim settlements of 100s of years ago, some of which are being disputed now. We have given aboriginal peoples many of the things they wanted, including the reserve system and easy access to firearms and natural resources that most Canadians don't have. We even gave aboriginals exemption from paying taxes on top of all these things. I think they are taking us for granted, and I cannot help but feel that they are inspired by seeing other special interest groups getting attention and privileges from the leftist media. Canada is up for grabs, so might as well take what you can get, no? Whether you're a homosexual, feminist, Muslim, black, Francophone, or whatever, as long as you're not an English-speaking white guy, there must be something that you're entitled to!         Natives are taking their unrest to new heights by calling for a national day of protest on June 29th, 2007. They want to set up roadblocks across the country and are threatening to get violent unless we agree to halt all rail traffic on that day. I say this is a declaration of war by the natives against the rest of Canada. Whether or not the natives are serious remains to be seen, but the thought that many hard-working Canadians will have their civil liberties violated as a consequence of a small number of natives having a public tantrum makes me angry. And these people want us to celebrate their culture on June 21st?? You've got to be fucking kidding! These noble people were once proud warriors, but now they are coming across mostly like terrorists. So, I would like to propose the following... CRASH A BARRICADE DAY June 29, 2007         The native protesters say they will not fire upon anyone who does not fire upon them. So, what's to stop the average Canadian stuck in traffic from taking their car and ramming it through a protest barricade? They hate us, but they don't want to hurt us, right? Well, we're just going to have to take their word for it. I am offering anyone who crashes a native barricade on June 29th a free Tim Horton's coffee. Yes, you have to crash the barricade before I give the coffee to you or your next of kin. Offer void in Quebec.
