THE GREATEST CANADIAN
GLENN GOULD      Born September 25th, 1932, Gould was only 50 years old when he passed away October 4th, 1982. His achievements as a master of the piano and several other artistic disciplines would more than fill the average lifespan. Give-a-buck.com dedicates the month of October to Gould and bestows on him the title of "The Greatest Canadian" (sorry, Nash!) for being the best at doing what he loved most. Gould is to piano music what Kasparov is to chess and what Hendry is to snooker. When you are so incredibly good at what you do, nobody questions you about your abilities or your knowledge. Perhaps public perception of Gould was created by design. He was known as an enigmatic, eccentric and private individual, but as a public figure, he was given the respect he deserved to not have the media pry into his personal life. And so we remember Gould for what matters most, his music. There is no shortage of websites that tell of Gould's life and times, including The Glenn Gould Archives, a Canadian public institution dedicated to preserving the estate of the late artist and making it accessible to Canadians for generations to come. Glenn Gould will never be forgotten. |
