HERBERT BRUNO MARSCHNER

1931-2005

In the early hours of Tuesday, January 4th, 2005, my family was dealt a severe, unexpected blow. My father had spent the past three weeks in hospital, over almost the entire Christmas and New Year's holiday period. He had triple bypass surgery on December 30th; the operation was a success. His recovery went smoothly, and in a few days, he would be able to come home for the first time since spending a few hours with us on Christmas day. Unexpectedly, he slipped away in his sleep without warning or reason on the morning before his release, and the staff on duty were not able to revive him. Family from all over North America came to Ottawa to say goodbye. Many friends of my father and other family members were in attendance for funeral services on Friday, January 7th, and we are deeply thankful for their support.

Even though I spent all of my life until now in Ottawa living close to my family, I never felt emotionally attached to my father. He lived his life on his own terms for his own enjoyment. Despite our differences and estrangement, I admired certain qualities he possessed and I cannot deny being my father's son. Perhaps I am more like him than any of my older siblings. I am deeply moved by this tragedy as I knew my Dad was never fond of hospitals or of doctors. He wanted nothing more than to come home after his surgery; his home was his castle. So why fate gave us hope until the last minute, we will never know. The sadness I feel is the sadness of my mother, sister and brothers. January 4th was my older brother's birthday. My parents were less than a year away from celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on December 24th, 2005.

The following obituary appeared in the Ottawa Citizen, January 6-7, 2005:
