HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
YOUR MAJESTIES!

Queen Elizabeth II

Victoria Day
May 19, 2008

Queen Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819. Her birthday is celebrated in Canada as a national holiday on the Monday on or before May 24th every year. What you may not know is that Victoria Day is also the official day recognizing the current monarch's birthday. Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21st, 1926, but Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries officially celebrate her birthday on different dates. In Great Britain, the day is in June when the weather is expected to be good.

On a grim note, a class action lawsuit is being filed after a man attempting to immigrate to Canada from Trinidad-Tobago refused to swear allegiance to the Queen, a necessary formality to becoming a Canadian citizen. The man cites British Empirial bigotry against persons of his race during past colonialism as his reason for the refusal, and now lawyers are trying to argue on his behalf that forcing him (and every other person trying to enter Canada legally) to swear allegiance to the Queen violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Since when does the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms apply to foreigners? And why does he want to move to a country where the Queen is the head of state if he has such a problem with the British? We as Canadians need to put our collective foot down and start taking back control of our own country from foreign interests. The following should come as no surprise to everyone living here:

CANADA IS THE QUEEN.

THE QUEEN IS CANADA.

You don't have to like it; you just have to accept it. (Keeping our Constitutional Monarchy is the only thing that prevents scoundrels like Pierre Trudeau or Jean Chretien from appearing on the $20 bill, so there are obvious benefits to having a Queen!) It is time for Canadians to take some pride and recognize what makes us Canadian citizens. And it is time to start having expectations of the people who want to come to Canada. Not wanting to live elsewhere is not a good enough reason to hand every prospective immigrant their Canadian citizenship and a Canadian passport. It is time for Canada to stop being a hotel for people who think they are entitled to having what we have without doing anything to deserve it. Our forefathers worked hard to provide us with the openness and freedom we now have. Let's not squander it on people who don't like our country but feel entitled to its benefits. Let's make Canada better for Canadians!

A toast to the Queen in honour of her birthday and all that is great in her glorious domain!
