1721 S-3646
George I
plain in angles
Fine  Seaby's guide to English silver coinage rates this coin's rarity as "R-4" (10 to 20 pieces known). However, as Seaby's guide was last published in 1974, it is likely that more of these coins have surfaced. Still, we're looking at a surviving population not unlike that of the Canadian 1921 halfdollar, the latter coin trending $32,000 in Fine. By contrast, the 1721 "roses and plumes" shilling is just "S" (scarce) to "R" (rare) depending on whether it has an overdate or not. A bold, evenly-circulated example with deeply-toned fields. The Spink catalogue puts a modest value of £110 on this coin, probably the result of collectors preferring to run after high grade common dates and varieties in the series. I paid above catalogue to secure this piece. Weight 6.0 grams. offer PIC
1723 S-3647
George I
SSC in angles,
first bust,
C/SS in 3rd qtr
EF  A common coin type with just hints of wear on the highest points. One spot of weakness on the reverse over the date. Nice even medium toning. I believe this is the C/SS variety, though only the lower half of the second S can be seen to the right of the C in the 3rd quarter (bottom right). I have not been able to get confirmation beyond spotting an identical piece on eBay (hardly an authoritative source). The Spink catalogue lists this variety but does not show a picture of it. See the close-up image. Weight 6.0 grams. $450.00 PIC 1

George II
roses in angles
gVF  Medium toning hides the light even surface wear on the obverse. The reverse has multicolour rainbow toning moving from yellow in the middle to red and then blue around the edges. Does not show up well in either the scan or the webcam images. Looks EF in hand. Weight 6.0 grams. $240.00 PIC
1758 S-3704

nEF  Very common date. Weight 6.0 grams. $120.00 PIC
1820 "S-3790" fake!!  This forgery appears to be made of brass. Reverse is a deep reddish colour, possibly an enamel. $5.00 PIC
1824 S-3811 F-VF  Shield in garter on reverse. Heavy toning. The image shown makes the coin look VF+. $22.00 PIC
1889 S-3926 VG   The rare Jubilee head (a.k.a. small bust) variety. An R-2 rarity according to Rayner (1992). $30.00 PIC
