There is no absolute concensus on what coins were used as Maundy coins prior to the New Coinage of George III. While the one and two pence pieces may have been used exclusively for Maundy gifts as opposed to being circulation pieces, all coins prior to 1816 excluding complete "sets" are listed below. A complete set consists of each of a 4, 3, 2, and 1 pence piece of the same date, and sets are listed under Maundy Money. Most small silver pieces after 1816 are Maundy pieces, but a few are genuine circulation issues, like the threepence which looked just like a Maundy piece, and these issues are listed HERE. I hope this is not too confusing! :)

1720 George I | S-3657 | EF  "HIPEX error". In fact, all of the R's on the reverse are P's with thin degenerate tails added to make them resemble R's. Compare them to the R's on the obverse. The lettering on both sides is large but uneven. The M in MAG looks repunched at least once over another M or some other letter. There's no doubt the engravers encountered space limitations and meant to engrave "HI REX", but the 2 words run together, thus we get "HIPEX". A common variety, despite the high catalogue value. | $160.00 | PIC |
